Make believe, reflect and vote
"Into the lens of the future, through the lens of artists" is the theme for the WPB's (SSA #33) Make Believe, a project to fill vacant store fronts with art.
Safety Action: Positive loitering at Western and Armitage on Thurs. July 22
Everyone is requested to join 1st Ward Alderman Proco "Joe" Moreno and 32nd Ward Scott Waguespack as police officers do a roll call at Western, Armitage and Wlmot at 6:30 p.m. on Thurs., July 22. This is a positive community action in support of neighbors in the area where there has been a rash of criminal activities.
The aldermen's requests are to show up, walk and talk with them, police and neighbors for a short period of time.
Spindles crank the idea "Home"
No U-Turn is the current exhibition at the Jackson Junge Gallery displaying paintings by Bruce Holwerda. In conjunction with this exhibition is a permanent display of work by Laura Lee Junge.
Community fights to annihilate heroin den, buildings face demolition
City of Chicago departments, neighbors and the 1st Ward Alderman's office have been fighting for more than a year to get 2719 and 2723 W. Haddon's property owner Anna Shoykhet of Northbrook to secure and clean up the sites. A heroin den and haven for the homeless, the Dept. of Streets and Sanitation is required to go out regularly to clean it up.
Record album covers from inception to extinction in our lifetime
Featuring seven different graphic categories of artwork on a treasure trove of 33 rpm (revolutions per minute) record album covers, the Ukrainian National Museum's "Rediscovering Ukrainian Album Cover Art" exhibit celebrates an art form and chronicles immigrant life in Chicago.
Rick Kogan gives high praise to Our Urban Times
Rick Kogan, gave high praises to Our Urban Times on his July 18 "Sunday Papers" radio show on Chicago's WGN 720 AM. "This kind of hyper local journalism ... is one aspect of the future of journalism," he commented.

"At times he was quiet but he was called Big Bill for many reasons," Veronica (Ronnie) Folak explained about her father William C. (Bill) who died Monday in the family bar and restaurant, Lincoln Tavern at Wabansia and Wolcott in Bucktown.

At the Coalition Gallery in Wicker Park the current exhibition is entitled Urban Eyes featuring the work of Meredith Dytch and Herwitt. The artists are inspired by the urban landscape, creating paintings that capture divergent scenes.
Potential State funding will provide relief to Chicago schools…maybe
Illinois Governor Patrick Quinn announced that a limited amount of school funding has been restored to the State's 2011 budget. However the state budget has not been approved by both the State House and Senate and it is uncertain when that vote will be completed.

In Montgomery Perry Smith's new show entitled Daisy Chain at Pawn Works he fuses beauty and horror through a collision of found and fabricated materials. The sculptural forms hang on the wall protruding like little worlds the viewer is teased to peer in. He disguises found chair pieces using them as a base to build these 'other-worldly' scapes.
